Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery

In the past, most surgery involving the reproductive organs was done by laparotomy (a surgical procedure in which an incision is made in the abdomen). Now, many of these same procedures can be done through the laparoscope. There are many benefits to laparoscopy - a shorter hospital stay, smaller incisions, and a shorter recovery.
Laparoscopy can be used to treat endometriosis, ovarian cysts, ectopic pregnancy, adhesions and fibroids. It can also be used to evaluate infertility problems. An advanced laparoscopy can be done to remove the uterus (a hysterectomy).

Laparoscopic sterilization was the breakthrough procedure that showed the utility of surgical laparoscopy. Next, laparoscopy made an impact on gynecologic surgery by reducing the need for laparotomy in treatment of endometriosis, pelvic adhesions, and ectopic pregnancy.

Laparoscopy is a technique for surgery that can be used on the female reproductive tract. It uses a special tool called a laparoscope (scope). The scope is a thin, lighted tube with a camera on the end. The surgery is done through a few small incisions in the abdomen. The scope is put through 1 of the incisions. It sends pictures from the inside the body to a video screen.
